Your Other Homepage

Technically when we say homepage, we actually mean the first page you see on your website. When we say your landing page, it’s actually refering to your other main pages or the top page of every sub-category/level.

For instance, if I had a button called Categories and when you click on it or place your mouse cursor over it, it drops down several other options. The Categories link when clicked on brings you to your landing page for that parent link.

Some people don’t have a landing page for their parent link because it doesn’t benefit their website. However, when some people do use their landing pages, some don’t use it beneficially.

Midvalley Bloggers Minutes

I first came across the news of the bloggers gathering from the PPS Review website. Though Errolyn (the so-called more popular half) wasn’t attending, that didn’t deter me from wanting to meet other bloggers like Peter Tan who mentioned about the meeting in Last Call for Bloggers Meet.

Bloggers like Dustyhawk also helped to spread word of the gathering through his Midvalley Megamall Gathering post. Though the list of bloggers supposedly attending looked short, I think other bloggers dropped by for a short stop.

An Entrepreneur's Selling Tips

Being a freelancer, I feel that it is most difficult to attain jobs because you’re working for yourself. You rely heavily on the word-of-mouth from friends, colleagues and family to help you get those jobs. In other words, a freelancer requires a network of people ranging from different ages to different fields in work.

I was introduced to a lady; Pat Lu, who has not only become my colleague but a close friend. Though I’ve only known Pat a short while, she’s told me most of her life story and the importance of making friends from 10 years younger to double her age. I really look up to her now because she’s very established in and out of her industry.

So as a freelancer, one of the important trades is being able to convince clients to select you out of the other potential people out there.

The 'Perfect' Web Design

As a designer, it’s honest to say that I’m a perfectionist always trying to achieve that perfect web design. However, as much as I tweak and nudge the designs around in Photoshop, it sometimes leave me with either a messed up design or a design that I’m still not so happy over.

Design is a totally subjective manner because everyone who views it feels differently. When you stare at the Mona Lisa, an artist would label it as the artwork. If you asked an accountant, he/she might label it as a nice picture. If you asked a designer, they’ll admit it being the artwork because they were taught that way but in their mind and heart they know there’s room for improvement because they’re perfectionist.

You Got GASS?

Hey hey, aim those loaded buns somewhere more open. The GASS that I meant was Google Adsense Stats Syndrome like the one I was speaking about in my previous article; Path of The Problogger – Adsense. It hasn’t been considered an actual medical diagnosis but like I said, it takes self-realization and honesty to step forward.

As much as this started as a laughing matter, imagine if you were without an Internet connection for a week or more. The results or behaviour would initially be the same like a person who has a mobile phone but no line in a foreign country. Trust me, when I was without any telephone communication in Melbourne for a whole week, I felt like I was missing a huge part of my life.

Path of The Problogger – Adsense

Observing the current wave of emerging professional bloggers (probloggers) has left me nothing but envious and inspired me to write a series that isn’t at all new. However, I hope to use this series as my little notes put aside on things that I’ve learnt through my own learnings and observations of these probloggers.

To kick start the series, I’d like to make the first note about revenue gaining through Google Adsense. I’m aware that everyone already knows about this Pay-Per-Click (PPC) program that I don’t have to explain. PPS DESIGN LEAKED

OH MY GOD! THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE! *wails*

Just when I was starting to design the new homepage template for Project Petaling Street (PPS), I found out on Google that someone already has released a new template for PPS. ARGH! This is not happening to me.

*breathes heavily* Okie, I’ll not lose my cool and fight for what should have been mine!

I will continue to design my template and outshine that other person. You’re gonna pay, you damn criminal!

Charging the Right Price

Back when I was in college, Drew introduced me to his uncle who needed someone to help prepare template designs. These template designs were to help propose a project to the Danga Bay developers. And believe me, when I think about it (I don’t have a copy anymore) I’m laughing at myself thinking how terrible a website designer I was at the time.

During that time, there wasn’t such an existence as web standards or it was just being introduced by Jeffrey Zeldman. That was also when his book was released, Designing with Web Standards. At that time in college, being nothing but a student who just wanted to graduate and enjoy life, website designing was nothing but a hobby with an occasional side income.

Being a fresh designer who hasn’t turned his passion into a career yet, I was confused and lost on how much should I charge Drew’s uncle. Hence, the uncle instead offered me RM100 per template and I needed to prepare 3 different ones. If he offered me that now, I’d say, “That’s LUDICROUS!”

Malaysian Blogger Repents

This is the follow up to the article, MALAYSIAN PIRATED BLOGGER which saw a new Malaysian blogger who launched the blog BloggerTips gaining early popularity for the wrong reasons. The wrong reason was looked at very severely when you’re taking an exam, in college, in university and now, on the Internet.

This new blogger in the local blogosphere recently announced that his mistake came from his ignorance of using live blog posts from other sources just to test his new blog. As much as I’d like to believe its truth and not hammer my own countryman, I find it very weird that a blogger or a person could just go ahead and utilize the tons of online content and not have a clue that credit should be given to the original authors.
