Malaysia Wimax Licencees Have Until August

Just a quick update on the Malaysia Wimax scene right now and the announcement by Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Senior Director for Technology and Standards Division, Mr. Zamani Zakariah to the four (4) Malaysia Wimax license holders:

All four mobile WiMAX operators have been given a deadline of until August next month to commercially launch the WiMAX service in Malaysia. Otherwise, there will be a penalty imposed on the operators if they fail to meet the deadline.

Zamani also hinted the Government might cancel the WiMAX license of operators if they failed to roll out the WiMAX service by the second deadline after paying the penalty. I sure hope it doesn’t happen otherwise we’re going to see you know who getting a license too. And, many of us don’t want THAT to happen.

Free Online Video Provider Veoh Bans Malaysia Viewers

This news is roughly a month old or longer but I never did look for what apparent reason the free online video source; Veoh, decided to ban Malaysia viewers. Not only that, apparently more than 30 countries have been inserted into the country banned list. If you think that’s bad, here’s the best explanation Veoh provided to enquirers:

Veoh is maintaining markets when we have the highest concentration of viewers.

As vague as it sounds, my business partner has described their action as “not many people use our service, so let’s stop them from using our service altogether!” And I’d say 3-cheers for Veoh, now all Malaysia users and other banned cuontries have the best reason to use YouTube more.

Share RSS Awareness Day

I want to say one thing before I start this post. The new Maxis commercial you see on the television; animated drawn on paper type objects, concept was from Common Craft. I wanted to say this out loud so everyone (hopefully) won’t be misled to believe it is an original concept. So back to RSS … Read more

Malaysia Conman Targets Malaysia Designers

Earlier today, some guy calling himself ‘Andrew’ called me posing as a client. He requested for the mobile number of graphic designers I knew; specifically freelance designers. The alibi he shared with me was he is working with an international company and his colleague (Madam Tan) passed him my number. Then, he told me the company wants to design catalogs and brochures. Even had the cheek to tell me they had a RM10,000 budget.

His reason of not being able to tell me the company name is in the past, someone from a large agency leaked their product idea out and it was copied. Carelessly believing his story, I passed him 3 mobile numbers of people I knew. Out of the 3 people, two run small graphic design companies. And he met with one of them.

MCMC Malaysia Have To Arrest Email Mailing List Suppliers

pen and letterMCMC stands for Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Communications and they are the government body responsible for the deployment of spam laws including SMS and email in Malaysia. I know about them because I literally took an hour plus trying to find more information about the spam laws in Malaysia.

And as you may have guessed, we don’t exactly have a CAN-SPAM act in Malaysia. Without this plus the legal guidelines of mailing lists, there are local companies openly selling email mailing lists. I know this for a fact because some Malaysia company spammed me with their…

Youth Malaysia Exposes Bloggers Emails

Youth08 Malaysia Dotcom Youth SearchBeing one of the bloggers who participated in the Youth08 Malaysia Dotcom Youth Search, all bloggers recently received a mass email from the organization. The sad predicament Youth Malaysia have themselves in now is they exposed 396 bloggers. I got the figure from HongKiat as I was just too lazy to start counting the number of email addresses residing in the CC line.

Once Hong Kiat pointed it out through the email, the bloggers (or website owners) have started a social group meeting. Come to think of it, bloggers (or website owners) who are using Gmail can be considered very fortunate. Why? It’s because Gmail lists emails as conversations. If you were running the normal Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail or your own personal email, you’ll be expecting a lot of repetitive email replies – one by one. Gosh!

December 2007 Online Consumer Trends

statistics chartOne of the things I find intriguing is the online consumer trends. Though the statistics may not reflect the consumer trends of Malaysia, it’s the overall picture online. My fascination with this trend proves the behavioral activities of an Internet user. For example; How do online consumers spend their time?

87%: Read email
70%: Search for information
64%: Do search
60%: Shop
37%: Use instant messaging

Advertlets Online Advertising Has Expired and Resigned

Updated: January 5, 2008 @ 9:56PM
Josh has replied in the comments and informed they are rectifying the domain name DNS issue. A temporary solution to access Advertlets has been included in the post. :)

Advertlets logoI’m a Nuffnang supporter for one. Therefore, I’d first like to shout, “Nuffnang has triumph!”. Ever since the Malaysia market was introduced to localized online advertising agencies like Nuffnang, the first competitor to rise up on the occasion was Advertlets. The company was founded by Josh Lim who also heads his own web design agency.

However, it seems to me Advertlets has thrown in the towel as their domain expired on January 3, 2008. From what I’ve observed, I believe it’s due to blogger payment problems, customer support and pressure from the constant new registration of bloggers for their program. It was unmanageable…so to say.
