December 2007 Online Consumer Trends

statistics chartOne of the things I find intriguing is the online consumer trends. Though the statistics may not reflect the consumer trends of Malaysia, it’s the overall picture online. My fascination with this trend proves the behavioral activities of an Internet user. For example; How do online consumers spend their time?

87%: Read email
70%: Search for information
64%: Do search
60%: Shop
37%: Use instant messaging

Other interesting statistics I found online were:

Email Usage Statistics
274: Average number of personal emails weekly
304 : Average number of business emails weekly
26%: Opt-in email campaigns as percentage of total inbox email
74% : Email users with 2 email accounts
18%: Email users who use mobile devices to sort email

Email Unsubscribing Behavior
53%: Say email is irrelevant
40%: Say email comes too often
26%: Unsubscribe using spam button

The analyzing of trends can affect the action plan you had in mind for a marketing campaign. In this case, it’s the email marketing you may be using. From the unsubscribe behavior, it is prevalent email users are unhappy with the email newsletters they have subscribed too. What’s odd is the retention rate is higher in comparison to it being reported as spam.

How often should email newsletters be sent out?
