Do You Earn More Money With This Advertisement?

Yup, that’s the one. I’ve constantly seen this particular advertisement on several bloggers blogs who are blogging for money. Hence, it got me thinking why are these bloggers utilizing this blog advertisement especially with such a large size? The number one peeve I have with this particular advertisement is its size. It’s huge!

Okie, huge might be an exaggeration but it does take more than three quarters of the content space. Not to mention this advertisement normally sits above the content. Which means readers actually are ‘forced’ to scan this advertisement before getting to your real content. Therefore I’m pondering at the moment, is it because these bloggers earn more money with this advertisement?

In my humble opinion, advertising this size should be floated to the left or right. The right side would be my choice so it doesn’t deter the user from scanning the original article. If it were floated to the left, again it’ll distract reading the article and somehow feels lopsided. Maybe that’s because I’m right-handed or maybe it’s just human nature in some eccentric way.

Another thought which came to me on why these bloggers may be using this advertisement size is because automatically there are more contextual ads displayed. An advertisement of that size normally fits 4 text links or 1 graphic ad. I’ve been seeing less graphic ads at that size especially if it’s from Google Adsense. So does having 4 text links in that space mean a possible higher earning income from each click through.

Or could it be with an advertisement that size, any user is bound to accidentally click on one of its links? I may be spouting nonsense here but if you thought about it, 3 posts back to back with this advertisement size does increase chances of accidental clicks. As you’re scrolling down…oops! I didn’t mean to click that.

Well, I hope someone could explain this blog advertisement size phenomenon or wouldn’t mind sharing why in the world did they position this inelegant advertisement size above their content?

Because I sure can’t seem to put my finger on it.

  2. So far the click-through rate of this advertisement hasn’t been performing very well. My link units are still outperforming this advertisement and in total, even my 468 x 60 banner is doing better.

What are our ‘similar’ objectives if you don’t mind me asking? :)

  3. Hmm, a very interesting remark Paul. I’m not sure when you loaded post and it so happened to have been an image-ad or probably it just looks like an image ad. Nonetheless, that is a new finding for me on how reader behave towards it. :)

  4. what i meant by “similar objectives” was about your website. example of how bloggers make money via advertisement…

    cheers

  5. Ohh, that. Yup, I do make money from the advertisements but my aim to make enough to cover my hosting. Spills are treated as bonuses though I haven’t overspilled just yet. ;)
