The Different Types of Blog Posts

paper filingBlogging has become a commodity and it has helped open up new areas for blogging especially in Malaysia. Instead of jotting down our daily lives, some of us are depending on our blogs to put food on the table. This is thanks to the different types of blog posts.

I’ve observed a number of blogs and generalized the types of posts are: common, tattle tale, summarized, write-up, review, paid or sponsored, and charity. Obviously, not all of them generates revenue like the most popular topics in a blog and they are also not blog niches.

Common Blog Posts
This needs no explanation. They are your average joe writings of a teenage rock star aiming to be the next Albert Einstein who likes debating their status in order to become the next idol in Malaysia. Yeah, I think that pretty much sums up what a personal post normally comes out.

Tattle Tale Posts (or Viral Marketing)
Secrets are easy to listen to but hard to keep. Of course, that’s not saying everyone is that way. But tattle tale posts are normally the recent news you’ve heard. Which is why I thought this is kind of like viral marketing…in some way.

Summarized Posts
To cut a long story short, you prefer writing about the juicy facts. Forget about the mediocre details of how you want to start and end. Focus only on what’s important and you can get a head start by first studying; How To Make Japanese Buffets Worth It.

Write-up Posts or Articles
A write-up is like writing a report. It sounds like a review but it is not. For example; if I did a write-up about the iPhone in Malaysia. I’d be saying how good I found each function to where I bought it from. A number of publications do write-up articles despite calling them; reviews.

Review Posts
What’s the biggest difference between a write-up and a review? I get to talk about more bad things on the subject. Like; Why Malaysia is Not Talking about the iPhone? or RM2998 to Own Apple iPhone in Malaysia. Anyway, I believe a review should be an honest opinion on the subject. If there are more bad sides to it than it proves it should be improved. Instead of defending, turn the bad into good.

Paid or Sponsored Posts
Difference between this and a review. You are paid to write the post. And you are ‘kinda’ paid to say more good things than bad. However, some sponsors have realized by limiting the writers it results in an unnatural writing tone. Plus, writers are now encouraged to publicize or inform readers if a post was indeed sponsored or not. Oh yeah, I consider advertorial in this category too.

Charity Posts
Another no brainer. You write for the benefit of a non-profit organization to aid them in their cause. One of the charity posts I did was when Nuffnang joined Honda to Save Rhinos. If you have a strong positioned blog, give back something not to the community but to the people (or animals or nature) who need it most.

Well, those are pretty much the different types of blog posts I’ve found and read. Add the ones you found missing into the comments below. :)
