Zzap! eSportAsia 2005

I gave my agents a break so I needed other means of finding something to talk about for today. As I was trying to figure out the template structure of ZenCart, one of my pals messaged me on MSN. He was mentioning that my ol coconut head is up to something.

In promoting LUCTs game design course, the university is hosting Malaysia’s premier international egames festival. The event begins on 15th August till the 21st. The festival will have gaming tourneys with scheduled workshops and a business forum. You could find out more details of the festival at EGamesAsia.com

In the meantime, there’s a lot of screwtinizing to do about the website.

Everyone knows that LUCT is one of the big names in the design industry. They have twinning programs with universities from Australia to even Canada. Their marketing is so great that you’d normally see their ad in the papers Education section. The coconut head has managed to build LUCT into a massive education organization though many still question the quality of students coming out from it. When I was there, it literally was a daily catwalk for the ladies. For the guys, if you had the hot chic then you were one of the ‘in’ people.

Thinking how a design university should have much concentration in what they do, I would’ve thought at least that they’d be the one handlind the website. But nope, they just had to hand it to someone else to do it. They handed it to a company that to me makes the job looks half done. I’m very sure the LUCT board should be aware that the person you hire to handle your website also reflects back on yourself. So what’s wrong with the Zzap! website.

I’m very sure students already have wonderful eyesight staring at the monitors daily. Throwing in a navigation bar with miniscule text for them to read, how thoughtful. I think even in-game content isn’t as bad when you’re comparing readability.

The coloring of a single alphabet in the header titles are a bit stupid if you ask me. Sure it follows the banner, but did you ever notice that it’s pretty distracting when you look at it in the Background page? Still talking about coloring and about to present evidence that the LUCT organization didn’t really pay attention to the website, the first chart on the Prizes page is hideous.

One of the basic rules of website development is never never never put up a page with an Under Construction explaination. On the pages of Gallery and News Kit, the message says:

Coming Soon
This page is still under construction. Stay tune for updates!

Now what I learnt online on how to handle situation like this in a more professional manner, is provide a method for users to be tuned in. How do you tune your users in? Easiest would be email of course.

Overall, I think this must have been a rush job. If I were a web design leturer in LUCT, students would only end up getting Bs for this. And seriously, even if you were going to put the shadow on the outer borders it wouldn’t be that dark. I find no control of the shadow density is behaving like an amateur. For example; if you wanted to photo impose someone on the photo, the shadow should be based on the background and the light direction. In this case, it’s the background color.

If they were going for the hip and technological theme, I think they could’ve done absolutely better. LUCT being known to copyright students works so they can use it for their own good should’ve just ask some students in ADoM to design the website. Then later pass the template to the development company.

This is why web design isn’t what it’s used to be anymore. Sure, you can make a website look nice. However, how does it work for the masses would be another issue. And this is why I will always tell clients what is best for them although they might not listen.

A standard is being demanded around the world. I’ll be one of them to deliver it in Malaysia by force if I have to later.

11th August 2005
The website has been revised and though it might look better, I think using Flash just for the navigation was a little pointless. Also, if you noticed the 3 banners on the homepage, don’t you feel the text is hard to read? Overall, it might look better but the entire experience is still terrible.

  1. hey i like the way u comment about the website.Totally agree, besides it look like the words r out of the templates…so fake..like cut and paste….i wonder if i do this also can get cash lol….

  2. Hey, noprojects. Thanks for the compliment. :)

Well, you pay special attention in what you love. Same goes like how some guys can just love their cars. LoL!

  3. sometimes how things work in full time job isnt like wat u do in freelance job.

so dun make urself like the only one that know alot of stuff and make other malaysian look stupid.

  4. As far as I recall, I never implied anything in my review that clearly showed Malaysians as stupid people. All I did was review the website in honesty. Your assumptions of me trying to make Malaysians look stupid is your own personal word and not mine. Therefore, how is it possible for you to put those words in my mouth of calling Malaysians stupid? o.0

Oh, and if you’d like to know more about me. I’ve worked in a company before and not just jumped into freelance the moment I graduated. :)

p/s: Did you do the website?

  5. gah, you should’ve taken a screenie of it ;)

designwise, i have little to complain about. But by sweet gunther, 2 doctype , body and html tags in a single page (main page)? No they’re not using frames…

    can somebody tell me WHY?!!!!
    >:(
