Destroy The Web 2.0 Look in Malaysia

web 2.0I feel embarrassed and ashamed of myself. As a Malaysia website designer, we are suppose to create, innovate and conceptualize. But ever since the Web 2.0 design style took us by storm, misconception of the web 2.0 design style is existent.

Therefore, I want all Malaysia website design companies and designers to watch Elliot Jay Stocks address the current issue at his speech during the recent Future of Web Design (FOWD) conference.

p.s: Why can’t Malaysia have cool conferences similar to FOWD and others at an affordable rate?

  1. i think the misconception of the web 2 comes from the unknown elements of it
or more precise form not knowing what is web 2 exactly stand for
for conference like this one in malayasia its difficult to find dedicated ppl who can
understand the important of such conference or at least seminars

  2. LOL. I never bothered about Web 2.0

So far only 1 client requested for Web 2.0 influenced site.

Just because Web 2.0 can be nice that doesn’t mean it should be used.

  3. Malaysia clients refer to Web 2.0 websites as design references but don’t understand the idea behind having it design that way.

In other words, even before misconception comes in the Malaysia client doesn’t even know what Web 2.0 is. They’d rather be talking about a bargain then what works best for their customers, their business and themselves. And literally following that order.

Haha, I’ve been waiting for this ‘miracle’ to happen for a very, very, very long time…

  5. there should be a cool conference like this. Danny, why not YOU make it happen? I’ll definitely take part in it. how about it? hehe…

  6. Chee Aun, I know what you mean. After all, MDEC is only all about the animation, 3D, motion graphic and more animation now. Talk about Multimedia…

We’ll see, Aisyah. We’ll see…though it can’t be free unless the government wouldn’t mind sponsoring the event. :P

  7. Danny, I think that XM was supposed to organize a usability talk sometime this year, but I haven’t heard anything about it. Let’s go for that event if it happens? But I totally agree with you. I’d definitely be on for FOWA-type events in Malaysia.

As for Web 2.0, I so hate that term now.

When somebody asks about Web 2.0, I ask them to tell me what 1.0 is first or STFU. =P

  8. Well, it ‘was’ suppose to happen. But I guess we’ll have to wait it out for the moment…or come up with something of our own. Like the Web Standards Malaysia event being discussed on Facebook right now. :)

But if XM (or any other company) is planning to extort money by having a workshop like Internet marketers, I won’t be there. :P

  9. I watched Elliot’s presentation on other website few months ago, and I love it. I used to like that so-called web2.0 ‘design style’, glossy etc. Not anymore.

But I rarely see any Malaysia website with such heavy glossy web2.0-ish effect. Any examples?

btw, yeah we should start that kind of conference. how about those guys at wsmy.org ? :)

  10. Well, I don’t want to go on mentioning names but you’ll definitely find some. :P

As for the conference, well…WSMY is trying to organize a get together for the meantime. But I’ll try talking to Maharis when I meet him later. Haven’t met the dude before. LOL!

  11. yeah, actually pretty done talking about this web 2.0 look.

Its hard to understand when clients say “i want a web 2.0” – and since there’s no textbook for webdesigner and there’s no definite meaning of this, it made my life harder to explain this matter to the clients and trying to talk him out of it.

Do we really have this kind of quality conferences in malaysia anyway ? Never heard of one before.

just consider me as a designer who would not use web 2.0 look since that’s not really my style.

Danny, have any events that you would like to organize in mind ? If you do, i’ll help you out. I really do think that malaysians needs this kind of conferences.

Btw, its nice too see you blogging this kind of stuff again. Ever since you consecutively posted about iphone, i kinda lost interest. Sorry man, but good that you’re back.

  12. Very true. However, I believe the Web 2.0 look isn’t everything. Looks are deceiving. End of the day, it’s the experience which will convert the user. And the user is the one thing lacking is all especially government websites which are going online today.
