5 Most Common Type of Emails in Email Marketing

An email newsletter is a general term to describe the common type of emails used in email marketing. However, did you know an email newsletter could actually be broken down into different categories?

The 5 most common type of emails used in email marketing are:

  • Announces
  • Newsletters (Trust me, you’ll learn more soon)
  • Promoters
  • Occasioners
  • Press Releases

Here’s a quick breakdown of the business goal(s) and value each could bring you when used in your upcoming email campaign in future.

Announcements
These are mainly used to make general announcements for the company. For example; Simpleet Solutions have decided to move into a bigger, wider, cleaner, fresher but cheaper office environment. The business goal is to mainly alert current customers of your growth and to probably tell potential customers you are growing in some way. The value email announcements can bring you is the ease of updating old and new customers of your company.

Newsletters
Yes, so what is a newsletter and how is it really different? A newsletter is really an email to connect your company and your potential customers closer by keeping them in the loop of your business. The information normally found in a newsletter is informative if not helpful. For example; recently Simpleet Solutions were engaged to assist in the Tourism Malaysia project; Visit Malaysia Cyber Campaign. This information is to remind your customer of the existence and the new work being done by your company.

Promoters / Catalogs
Without me telling you, you would already assume this email would be filled with promotions or products on bargain. Which is absolutely correct. This type of emails are commonly sent out by Hotlink and DiGi to subscribers to inform them of latest promotions like less cost per calls and SMS.Besides blowing your own marketing horn, this email would normally have more effect being run more than once and I’m not saying SPAM.

Occasioners
This can fall into Announcers but as they say, one shoe may not fit all. Okie, maybe I made that up. Anyway, this type of email is used to send out celebrations to your customers. Sending your continuous well wishes and luck to their business will come back to you later. Maybe it’s just karma or feng shui. Go figure.

Press Releases
How is this different from announcers? Well, let’s just look at it from an all time business marketing point of view. If we had a product to help specific group of customers and would like to shout about it, this is one of the great ways. Not to mention if coupled with guerilla marketing and the offline media picks it up, you’re set for a long run in business.

So there you have it, 5 of the most common type of emails used in email marketing. At least it’s the one I’ve encountered at this time. Maybe we should have one called SPAM and no explanation there what it’s used for.

How frequent do you think newsletter emails should be sent to you?

  1. Hi Danny, nice post on email marketing. I work for Listrak, an email marketing solution provider. We published a whitepaper entitled “Five Step Email Marketing Self Assessment Guide” a while back that your readers may find useful. We also have many other whitepapers and articles in our email marketing resources area at http://www.listrak.com/reources.

  2. Hi Brent. Thank you for the resources. It’ll really be helpful and informative to find more about email marketing.

I’m actually rather curious of Listrak. Is it an offline software I run from my own server or is it an online service?

Sorry for asking that question, the video tour is loading too slow for me here in Malaysia.
