Word Spelling Affects Search Engine Optimization

alphabet blocksIn the US, they pronounce flour as “fla-ar” but in the UK, they call it “flower”. When it comes to the spelling, there is a close difference between each written language. What’s bad especially is how most software and application set the default language as US.

If you were to type analyze, it is correct based on the US syllabus. However, our English syllabus in Malaysia follows UK, we should be spelling it analyse. Right now as I’m continuing to type, Mozilla Firefox is saying analyse is wrong. When in fact, it is correct if I were to practice the correct spelling I’ve learnt in school.

I’m definitely no English police but when I thought about it, word spelling can affect the ways you are optimizing your website or blog for search engines. Google is based in the US so obviously the default language would follow the US syllabus. If you stop a moment to think about it, the articles you constantly type or may be reading could be based on US syllabus.

The advantage here is we are optimizing for search engines like Google, Yahoo! and MSN. On the other hand, are we destroying our own spelling through blogging? Yes, practicing your English by writing or typing is good but when it concerns the fact we are spelling wrongly then it should be something to consider.

On one hand, we have the requirement to optimize our websites so they rank higher in search engines. On the other, we also have the requirements to fulfill the proper English spelling based on the UK syllabus. As a Malaysia web design provider, I’m caught between two rights and I can’t wrong either of them.

Therefore, I believe in Malaysia we shouldn’t be worrying too much of students using shorthand notes but of the oncoming risk schools will face. Blog setups are increasing rapidly and the registrants are mostly kids to teenagers. If we do not start monitoring or educating them on the practice of misspelling through blogging, our English education is going to see a problem soon.

Question of the day:
Are you spelling based on the US or UK syllabus? Or you don’t know?
