WebSighting #7

Just recently I got an email from agent DesignersDepot and the retrieved results this time around was astounding. Not only are there 2 websites featured this time round, these websites are in Flash.

Yes, the dreaded interactive motion tool that is now plagued as one of the worst media to use online. Reason? Just because its been abused by many designers who only utilize its minor potential, that is animation.

Alas, there are modern designers around who still remember how to utilize this tool to great lengths. Not only do these websites showcase excellent animation, their innovativity with the inclusion of video is just wonderful.

First website is about a product that will introduce you a more hip lifestyle. How? Well, long ago when Tamagotchi was the toy to be seen playing, its now been overthrown by more geeky toys. This product is a pen but not any ordinary pen in the 21st century.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the FLY Pentop Computer. I’m sorry to say first hand that I couldn’t advance far in this website because of its heavy video type animation. This is one of the many flaws when you surf high-bandwidth websites on a Pentium III with only 256MB RAM.

Though I didn’t get very far in this website, I’m still satisfied even with the introduction. You see the pen and are able to use it to doodle on the paper whilst it loads. Not bad a company to have while waiting. And on another note, the website really stuck to its product. ;)

The next website has nice retro like colours and its animation is simply awesome. I didn’t check if the website was using XML since I was too entertained by its cute animations. The website and animations are done by Flash Web Designer, Stephane Gulliot.

The interface reminds me a bit of like some game yet spy like scene. He’s got a cute character of himself turned into a 3D like animation. It’s entertaining seeing him walk and interact with the elements inside the interface. The more enthusiastic Flash designer might’ve allowed visitors to roam the room freely with the arrow keys.

Nevertheless, his website should be used as an example to great interactive animation. No more do we see flat 2D graphics of Flash but an era of 3D-ish styled animation. The quality and accomplishment of animations like Ninjai has raised the bar for animation and Stephane shows that he’s got it too.

So leave me be as I strip him down and make him wear a bikini. ROFL!

  1. Well, I keep my readers updated with the help of agents out there. :) And Streamyx must have been b*tching during that time. LoL!

  2. Like you, I myself am not a very big fan of Flash-based sites. Used sparingly, it’s actually a really cool tool to have/use, but I’m not into having it as being the only thing that’s used on a webpage.

The intro of FYL actually RELATES to the product itself. I’m impressed enough by that. But the pen, the doodling, and the quality of the ink (so lifelike!) on the (grainy!) paper itself astounds me.

Stephane’s site is brilliant. Quirky music, character, brilliant usage of colour; nice.

    Ninjai is cool! ^_^
