In view of the road safety system, I applaud them for finally taking the effort of coming up with something like this. However, many are questioning the steps involved to help aid them. Its promoting of catching reckless drivers with camera phones or digital cameras doesn’t encourage safety with many locals. Well, that’s another agenda for the system to curb.
I was actually quite impressed with their launched website. It had that new age look to it and am very proud that they might’ve put a little more effort into a government website. Here’s a screenshot of it and click it to view larger version.
I want you readers to try and identify what do you think still can be improved?
Well, let’s start from top to bottom and see how many you got right.
The link to switch the language to English is being obstructed by the banner below. The navigation in the header doesn’t necessarily represent itself as a navigation. The text links don’t look like buttons and they’ve dropped to a second line. I have to hand it to them though for making the text nice and big for even the slightly ‘blur sighted’ to be able to read. The marquee ‘Bookmark This Site!’ does not work. The marquee is old and if you want someone to bookmark it, you don’t make them play ‘catch’ with the link.
Kudos to the designer of those random banners. Your masking and blending of the colors and the scenes are very well done. One issue I have with it is that tiny ‘more’ button. I’m not wearing glasses but yet have to squint a little to make out that word.
Those four main buttons; Have Your Say!, Hall of Shame, In the News and Games are done quite nicely to attract attention. Issue with the four buttons is that if the image and the text below lead to the same area, why not just make that whole area a link?
As we venture to the right navigation now and look at Street Smart, why is the tab a button but not the image and text below it? There’s also a redundant link of the Street Smart title and the link, Safety Information and Tips. I’ve also found out that if you wanted to view Statistics or Know The Law again, you’d need to go back to the homepage.
The content pages seem to be alright though the only annoyance some might find is the opening of a new window without warning when clicking on Have Your Say! and Hall of Shame.
In general, the website does its job but as you’ve read there are flaws overlooked and I didn’t even mention things like usage of color or a commercial supposedly somewhere on the website (according to the feedback page). All this were given, since the website is quite a leap of what I’d normally find for a government website. Especially when I saw it had animations!
So looks like there is a shine of good websites to be owned by the government in future. :)
Never thought they would come up with that web. Applauded the effort . Still they have a lot to improve. I am still wondering when those people in black name tag are going to buck up their acts.
