I was discussing about a new official website with a friend of mine and when I shortlisted some of the works I’m planning to put in the portfolio, we started a talk about the credibility of including works such as blog designs into the portfolio.
He said that having too many weblog designs as part of the portfolio might have potential customers question our status in this business. I totally understand his point of view especially when the customers don’t understand the whole weblog thing happening in Malaysia whether social, political or business wise.
My word not being totally against it was that I believe having weblog designs in the portfolio might bring fruitful investments. Reason is because nobody else in Malaysia is doing it professionally at the moment. And yes, anyone can do a weblog (just like the website issue) but how many of them really understands the way a blog works in exterior and business?
One of my weblog design projects I did back in 2004 was contributed to the effort of the Tsunami Penang blog. We all remember the terrible wave that wiped out buildings with mere salt water and the lives that it claimed that time. I wanted to help out the project somehow but didn’t have the time to post updates that frequently so I helped in what I’m passionate about, website design.
The other reason why I think weblog projects especially for corporate businesses should be included in the portfolio is because we’d be one of the pioneers of this criteria for any company thinking of setting up a blog of their own.
So do you think weblog projects should be placed in your portfolio?
yes. definitely.. especially for designs that were design for php (cms) like wordpress and nucleus..
portfolio is a representative of your works..
for me, i haven’t work profesionally yet, but many people have asked for my services.. mainly because i design compliantly and all those web designs were for blog site…
That is very true Ikram. But don’t you think too many weblog designs might just have you constricted to a certain category of web design in future?
that depends..
you need to balance it out with some ‘profesional design’ too..
but if your weblog design look profesional (good color scheme, cross-browser compatible, nothing that’s cartoon/anime-related ).. then maybe, your client will have a different view of it..
I agree entirely with you once again. :)
Thanks for the point of view and hope to hear more from you. Cheers.
