Malaysia iPhone X-APOP authentication support and secure connection failed

Apple iPhone interfaceThank you to everyone who’s been visiting and reading my blog – again. I’d like to personally apologize to readers who may have felt they’ve been shortchanged during my Apple iPhone in Malaysia series. It was my first time receiving a free item to review especially since it was the iPhone.

And because I now own an iPhone thanks to MAXIMiPhone, I’ll be blogging about it. But I’ll do my best to keep these posts brief and keep the iPhone topics secondary (or in emergency). This post is an emergency because after the upgrade to firmware version 1.1.2, a friend of mine who recently bought an iPhone showed me a mail problem.

There are 2 parts to this problem I encountered but I’ve luckily managed to solve both of them (with the help of Google). The first problem was when my friend wanted to add a new POP email account to his iPhone. He got an error which said:

Secure Connection Failed – the certificate for [email protected] may be invalid

Then, it asked if he wanted to Cancel or Continue.

iphone secure connection failedWhenever he clicked Continue, the verifying POP account information just continued processing. It was like the iPhone freezed or hanged. However, I found out (this is weird) that this is how the iPhone now adds the email accounts. I’m assuming it’s caused by the firmware version but it may be something else.

So when I tried adding a new POP email account, this is what I did:

  1. Click Settings
  2. Click General
  3. Click Auto-Lock
  4. Click Never (don’t let it go to sleep)
  5. Go back to Settings
  6. Click Mail
  7. Click Add Account
  8. Click Other > POP and fill in the required information
  9. Click Save and wait (Verifying POP account information)
  10. Click Continue when Secure Connection Failed is prompted
  11. Click Continue/Yes if you get either of these message:
    • SSL connection failed, would you like to try without it?
    • Secure Connection Failed…[email protected]:mail.johndoe.com…invalid
  12. It should complete and you’ll see your account added but to complete…
  13. Click the new email account
  14. Scroll down and Click Advanced
  15. Turn off: Use SSL (both incoming and outgoing)
  16. Make sure Authentication is Password
  17. Set Server Port for Outgoing Settings to: 26 (since TMNet blocks port 25)
  18. And you’re done!

Note this is only my guide when I setup my POP email account in Malaysia. Your outgoing port may be different from what I have mentioned so check with your Technical Support or Website Hosting administrator.

In addition to iPhone email encounters, I also got this message when I was checking my email today:

Cannot Get Mail
The POP Server “mail.johndoe.com” doesnot support X-APOP authentication. Please check your account settings and try again.

iphone mail authenticationIf you get this message, you’ll need to set the Authentication to Password. When I got the error and checked my settings, it was set to MDA-5 albeit only having MD5 Challenge-Response and HTTP MD5 Digest in the Authentication Settings.

Anyway, the Authentication settings is found in the Advanced area of your email accounts. This may only happen to your default email account if you’re on POP. But I checked the other email accounts just to be safe too.

So if you experience the iPhone mail X-APOP authentication support or secure connection failed, I hope this helps you too. :)

p.s: After you’re done, you can set your Auto-Lock back to your own preference.

  1. Just to let you know that while I was on the line with Apple trying to figure out the
    “Cannot Get Mail
The POP Server “mail.johndoe.com” doesnot support X-APOP authentication. Please check your account settings and try again.”
error message and she pulled up your blog that solved the problem! Thanks! The only thing I don’t understand is what changed. Did the iPhone switch to to MDA-5 “spontaneously” or did mail servers switch to new systems at the same time? I have two mail servers that I use and this problem occurred for both about two weeks ago.
    Thanks again,
    Dan Carter

  2. Dan, that’s excellent to hear. I’m especially surprised when the Apple personnel pulled my blog in particular to help solve your problem. Nonetheless, at least I know some of these articles are coming in handy. :)

  3. Thank you Thank you so much. I had set up all of my accounts on my iphone with no problems unti I tried my work account and then I had the problems mentioned above but your solution worked for me. I’m the only apple user in my office so I’m on my own.

    Thanks
    Dee

  4. That’s very good news to hear, Dee. You’re now officially the second iPhone user who found a solution to this problem. :)

  5. Thank you so much for posting this! I had the same issue, and freaked out because my hosting company said that they didn’t provide secure connections and I didn’t see an option to turn that off like in Outlook. I thought I had just bought the iphone for nothing! Then I followed your steps and it worked!!! Thanks a lot!!

  7. I’m glad it was of help, Joe. :)

Reason I posted this was because I was pretty sure the more tech-savvy would be searching a solution to this problem on their own before charging back into an Apple store.

  8. I’ve had the same problem on mail on my macbook (the X-APOP one) and your soluce did the trick ! Thanks a lot :)

  9. That’s a surprise, Lali. I’ve not experienced such a problem on my Macbook. And I formatted it a couple of days ago.
