Find Out the Success Behind Good Keywords

Previously I mentioned the growing trend of search engine position in Malaysia and how clients in Malaysia have become more aware of this trend.

Following that I also shared things to watch out when joining an online directory and how to make a wise selection of which online directory to join. This round, I’d like to talk about what we do and what you can do too to find the right keywords for your website.

So what is all this ‘jambalaya’ about keywords and choosing the right keywords for my website?

In my opinion, keywords are the new META tools of today and they compliment your website greatly. The phrase META originally comes from Metadata. Wikipedia has got a full explanation of it but I’m only going to use one of the definitions.

Metadata is information about data.

Keywords are the information about your website so to speak. By identifying the right and accurate keywords related to the goal and content of your website, it becomes better targeted in the search engines.

Using relevant keywords synchronized in your website content, enables the search engines to provide users a more accurate search result. Therefore, benefits both the user and your website in order to offer the correct service or product to the customer. If you’re looking for a dish washing detergent but only used the keywords detergent, it might be mistaken as clothes washing detergent instead.

So how to go about finding these relevant keywords for your website?

One of the reasons search engine optimization is costly is not only because you’re hiring a specialist in the field but it’s because of the time committed to research the appropriate keywords for your business.

I’ve personally found that I can spend 3-4 hours researching on relevant keywords and not even counting the number of hours spent planning and writing the copy for a website.

Without further due, here are tools I’ve used to do keyword research:

  • Google Suggest
  • Overture Keyword Selector
  • SEOMoz Page Strength Tool
  • Microsoft adCenter Labs
  • SEOBook Tools

Why am I not linking to those tools? Well, it’s because using those phrases directly as your search, you should be able to pull out the accurate result. ;)

So using those tools and lots of time, you’ll be able to find the appropriate keywords to use. Then from there it’s about testing and testing.

p.s: I forgot to mention that Google Adwords also allows you to set a set of keywords in order for them to relevantly place your paid advertisement in the right place at the right keywords.

p.p.s: And you must remember to NOT flood your copy with keywords. For example: I do website design becauase website design is like design of website that I design. Google is smart enough to detect these things and once they detect it, blame yourself for getting banned later.
