Is Sketching and Drawing Important to A Designer?

That’s what one of the members at Low Yat forums started asking. It might be a ridiculous question to ask designers but there are the exceptional few. The reason this members was asking his fellow companions is because he noticed in his course there isn’t a module for it.

There have been few replies in the thread and some commented yes, some said no, some said it depends on the field you’re doing and some say other things like;

after 5-10 more years…i’ll change to another field
where can earn more money
hurmm maybe that time i still do designing
as a freelance or for fun only

I’ll leave the quoted part a seperate discussion everyone can partake in the comments section later. But the question still prevails, is sketching or drawing a necessity in design?

I, of course agree to the fact that it’s important because I sketch out stuff before even working up a template design in Photoshop. And I also sketch out storyboards if needed for a Flash animation.

To ask if sketching or drawing is dependant on a field, it’s like asking if a painter paints on walls too.

I believe that no matter what field you’re in, as long you want to be a designer you’re going to have to know the basic tools of pencil, pen, paper and etc. Drawing, sketching or doodling helps keep your designer mind active and helps you train your visualization.

Therefore, is sketching and drawing important to a designer? Yes.

Unless anyone is beginning to think that it’s becoming old fashioned and we won’t need it sooner or later.

  1. as for me.. usually i sketch at paper.. then redraw again using flash.. then send for consultation.. my lecture more like the result for digital sketches rather than hand sketches.. they’ll said.. is this your sketches? heh

  2. With computer applications getting easier to use everyday, digital sketches are even more easier to produce if done correctly.

    Then again, hand drawn sketches are particularly useful if one does brainstorming for designs and ideas if you know what I mean.
