In my email today of the Adsense newsletter edition, they had a short interview with their optimization specialist (sounds cool, no?) Mike Gutner. So what does Mike do?
I work on AdSense optimization. We run tests to identify the best ways in which AdSense publishers can make the most of their Google ads.
No wonder everyone feels like working for Google. Not only do you have cool titles but you’ve got cool stuff to do in the office. I wonder if there’s anyone wearing fluffy slippers around the office. But let’s talk about Mike’s explaination of some ad placements.
In his reply to the question, Do the same optimization tips apply across all websites?
No, certain types of sites perform differently with AdSense. In general, we’ve seen that ads placed above the fold of the page perform best. Hwever in some cases, Google ads perform quite well below the fold. On article pages, for example, people often want more information about the topic after they’ve finished reading a story. Placing an AdSense ad unit immediately following an article provides relevant links to readers who want to continue reading about the subject. The same idea applies to forums; people tend to go straight to the bottom of interesting threads to read the most recent posts, and Google ads can perform really well there.
The bolded part is what I’d like to hear more from the Adsense people or users. I’d like to know their reason for placing ads where they put them. I want to know if their placing was for a reason as described and thought about like Mike.
It’s substantially enough and good to learn about the hotspots for our ads but I’d like to understand it deeper. I would like to know the behaviour of your clients towards the ads on your website.
If you’d like or learn more about what’s happening inside Google’s Adsense then head on over to their blog called; Inside Adsense.
testing, testing and testing!
every website is different. there is no golden rule for ads placement.
of course there’s a lot of testing involved. however, do you mean to say that you place ads in the current areas just because they are the hotspots in your website and there isn’t any driving force behind them?
