Is Drawing a Web Designer Requirement?

DunnoI realized I’ve been so overthrown discussing about my Apple iPhone in Malaysia I’ve nearly forgotten what this blog was about. Therefore, I apologize for the long hiatus and temporary replacement in website design content by the Apple iPhone.

Let’s start over by letting me share with you a fellow friend of mine who wants to be a web designer. I get a number of questions by students to undergraduates asking what are the requirements of a web designer in Malaysia. He posed the question to me; is the ability to draw a requirement as a web designer?

I told him I wasn’t exactly great with life drawing as well. I got like a B or C in it. *embarassed*

However, drawing is something you develop over time from lots of practice I would say. And today, I still can’t draw realistic people. Probably it’s because my interest doesn’t lie in realistic drawing but cartoons or characters with more freedom to explore.

It may have been wrong to say this but I really believe the most important thing is to pass your subjects and aim to score high in the ones you love. In other words, expect yourself to do better in Flash or Web and make sure you pass the others otherwise you’ll never graduate.

It’s a very simple logic. If you asked a school kid (who loves mathematics) to score high in History, they might do it out of pressure but you’ll notice they’d have no problem scoring in mathematics. Reason is because they love numbers and they love the equations. Sometimes logic is defied by the different thinking. A person who loves mathematics may not love numbers or equations instead being able to solve puzzles.

So is drawing a requirement to be a web designer in Malaysia? For me, it is not.

Drawing is only part of helping yourself and clients to visualize what you want to accomplish. The better the drawing, the better the visual results you can use to tell the story. But that doesn’t mean for a designer who’s only grade in drawing was B or C can’t win big projects.

Ultimately, I would say good drawing skills is a bonus to have but definetely not a requirement. However, requirements have their standards. Although mine may be lower, I would like the designer’s I know to be able to sketch out the results they’re aiming to achieve. Only being able to draw stick figures after 10 years of school isn’t a very good start for an aspiring designer of any category.

So doodle characters (or something) in your free time if you really wanted to design. Don’t let anyone or anything discourage you and your passion that easily. If you want to be a designer, be the designer – not necessarily a Leonardo Da Vinci.
