The daily email check routine found me a suspicious mail suppsoedly coming from eBay. It’s title was Question from eBay member but the email address used was not authentic; messages[a]signin-ebay.com.
Due to my normal curiosity of finding out other people’s website via their email address, the signin-ebay.com led me to an empty lot. That means someone registered the domain just to try and phish or trick anyone to giving their personal details later. I’ve got a screenshot of the email and something only a trained eye might notice.
The whole format and design of the email looks pretty real to me but for some reason the button image though it will be overlooked by a normal person. The copy of the email is like a standard email from eBay notifying their members and this phisher even included the fake item being enquired upon.
How’d I know it was a fake item? Well, it’s because though I do have an account with eBay I don’t have such an item, much less said selling an item on eBay that I don’t even do yet.
Now, here comes the interesting part of being a designer and recognizing eBay as a now large corporation with more than enough talented other designers on their team. Look at the logo and think what’s different about it. An authentic email from corporations like eBay will never overlook this kind of identity manner because they’re a professional body.
Around the logo, there are obvious white pixels which means that this logo has been taken of a white background which was deleted and placed in this spoof email. In conclusion, this spoof email is not fake proof :)
Anyway, just wanted to share this email with everyone and be wary of it.
