Am I a Web Designer?

Or a website designer? As I questioned myself this, I went, “yeah..being a web designer has a different meaning to it?” It’s because a web designer could mean someone who designs/develop something for the web. Still don’t get it? Well, the web which is also known as the Internet has many things that can be designed for it. A website, a CMS, a search engine and others.

When I asked myself again, am I really a web designer? It just hit me, I don’t design/develop applications for online use. So how can I be considered a web designer in real life? My job scope most likely falls into the criteria of a website designer because I design websites that work for the web. Hope everyone could follow me on this.

Now, a web designer as I interpreted above could actual be leaning towards a developer. A person who codes and develops applications for the web. So in other words, a developer is the person designing for the web by producing useful applications for it. A website isn’t qualified as an application because it’s more like a showcase.

What are your views on this?

  1. Web Designer and Website Designer… is there a difference? I don’t think so. I think you just somehow managed to confuse yourself lol

I do see why you are confused though, design can have many meanings. A web designer like yourself designs FOR the web. That means you design the interface for the software running on the site. May that be forums, CMS, blogs etc.

A web developer also designs… but the meaning of the word “design” is rather different. Your design is the interface, while their design is the software structure.

You have experienced this difference in our current project. You designed the interface of the site, while i designed & developed the software required for it.

So basically, web designer and website designer.. really not much of a difference. The distinction is already made with “web designer” and “web developer”. One works on the software’s interface, the other on the software’s structure.

Hope that makes your head clearer buddy :P

  2. Hmm, I did think of it that way. But if it really meant that, then why do people search for ‘website’ or ‘web site’ designers more often than web designers? This makes partial proof that people would see me as a website designer more than a webdesigner. :\

    Oh well..

  3. its just a term used. People know what “websites” are, they don’t necessarily know what the “web” encompasses. Think of “website” designers as a subset of “web” designers :)

  4. i too think that “website designer” and “web designer” are just different terms for the same thing.. but i would prefer the second one though.. LoL..

then what do u call someone that designs the website AND develops the blog codes?? jack of all trades?? haha… i would say that a “web developer” does all of those.. like the html and css for websites whereas “web designer” would do it up in Photoshop….
