Seth Godin Speaks Simple Landing Pages
Being without a doubt the most important page to any website of a purpose, the landing page is the first page you visit on your mission. If you were visiting Google’s search engine, their landing page is the huge logo and field for you to type that search.
Seth Godin who’s a reknown speaker and author of many books shared his mind about landing pages today. He mentions about the actions normally called in a landing page today. I found some really surprising opinions from him about landing pages but I believe he’s right to see them as the ideal landing pages.
Seth’s list of options that could be found on a landing page:
- Get a visitor to click (to go to another page, on your site or someone else’s)
- Get a visitor to buy
- Get a visitor to give permission for you to follow up (by email, phone, etc.). This includes registration of course.
- Get a visitor to tell a friend
- (and the more subtle) Get a visitor to learn something, which could even include posting a comment or giving you some sort of feedback
The other sentence that clearly hit me in the head of what’s lacking in landing pages of today;
..if you build a landing age, and you’re going to invest time and money to get people to visit it, it makes sense to optimize that page to accomplish just one of the things above. Perhaps two, but no more.
This is one of the reasons why I don’t like ready-made template designs and why we need a little more simplicity in Malaysian websites. Everyone wants everything to happen on the landing page that just results in baffling the user rather than asking them to complete the action.
But something is bugging me, are website users nowadays only able to handle two actions and not more than that?
Probably if it were a marketing campaign, than the least actions would bring in better results.
What do you think?
