After reading so many magazines, posts, articles and doing actual work, there can't be any PERFECT layout. it will always go back to how your users/online customers interact and buy stuff on your site. If you can increase revenue, increase $ per visitor, maybe less page loads and converts faster, then I guess that's a perfect layout. heck, if i designed a page, just text, no pictures but I tell you I get people to buy stuff from there, surely you wouldn't dub that the perfect layout right? heh. Would you even try to innovate it? why not? consumer behaviour changes through time. Like now, economy is perceived not so good and people want to save money. What a great way to start an online sale right? maybe add a new element on the home page for 'clearance rack! all must go!'
