Why Will I Not Use Windows Vista?

The ‘Wow’ starts now. Or so it seems.

Recently Microsoft launched its much awaited and anticipated operating system, Windows Vista. It has been roughly 5 years since the release of Windows XP by the Bill Gates company. Vista was and has been the most talked about operating system (other than Mac OS X) in the market.

In the effort of its marketing campaign, Vista promised end-users a more secure and new joyful experience. The operating system was said to provide the convenience and user-friendliness that was always missing in its operating system product line.

So if this new software is all its hyped up to be, why am I not interested in upgrading yet?

Well, for one when Vista was the talk of the technology world it was said that the operating system needed a minimum requirement of 1GB of RAM or computer memory. Memory prices might’ve dropped through the months after June 2006 but this won’t work for the plan of penetrating the urban market as part of the 9th Malaysia Plan.

Secondly and thirdly, after reading Toms Hardware Guide’s (THG) article; Windows XP vs Vista, they have mention effects Vista might have in your computer usage. Personally, it would be 2 critical effects in my computer usage.

The first is that Vista has the lack of support for the OpenGL graphics library. Eventually, this means that professional graphics applications are affected by it. Being a heavy Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator user, this worries me.

The second factor involves video rendering. THG mentioned that there was a difference of 18%-24% speed difference in completing DVD to XviD MPEG4 tasks. It might be because the application isn’t as new as Vista but who knows.

In conclusion, I agree with THG when they say..

If you really need your PC to finish huge encoding, transcoding or rendering workloads within a defined time frame… Don’t do it; stay with XP.

This is just a personal assumption based on facts I normally refer to when I’m planning for a new system or upgrade and is not intentionally made to disrupt the sales of any product mentioned here.

p.s: I can only give a personal review after I’ve a new system supported by Windows Vista.

But if you’ve got Windows Vista and am running applications like Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, games and etc. It will be good to know how’s your experience.

Tom’s Hardware gives us the lowdown of XP vs Vista; Windows XP vs. Vista: The Benchmark Rundown and they too agree it isn’t impressive enough to make me upgrade.
