Domain Names Made Simple
Before I migrated over to WordPress, I was saying how domain names will be spelt as d0ma41n n4m3s in future because of the less available choices around due to others purchasing and auctioning of domains at a mugh higher value.
I’ve also highlighted a great article on how to choose a business name written by Will Swayne before and if you haven’t read it, you should. Now from the masses unveils another article of tips for choosing a domain name along with graphical statistics by Dennis Forbes.
The article called Interesting Facts about Domain Names has a few things Dennis noticed about domain names:
- Best acronyms are in 4-5 letters.
- Average domain names are 11 characters.
- About 538 domain names are 63 characters.
- More male than female domain names registered. (based on US Census Bureau)
- Relatively few domains starting with Q, X, Y, and Z.
- The most common digit to start a domain is 1.
There’s a bunch of all these interesting facts found out by Dennis Forbes. At thend of his article he also sported a graph comparing the number of websites using the more popular names like Google, Yahoo or Microsoft as part of it’s domain name.
Google won if you’d like to know.
But the most shocking thing I discovered was that the maximum characters in a domain is 63. To top that off is that someone has even registered a domain called; DIDYOUKNOWTHATYOUCANONLYHAVESIXTY-THREECHARACTERSINADOMAIN-NAME.com
Gosh!
Anyway, time to grab a dictionary and see what cool names I could make with Q, X, Y or Z while the rest of you can read Interesting Facts about Domain Names.
