Learn Social Media Marketing from a Malaysian

Yeah yeah, it’s a very cheesy title. But good part about this is, it’s 200% true and he’s living in Malaysia unlike some of the other people. :P So yes, David’s a Malaysian whom I’ve worked closely with in website design projects. He’s now a social media consultant delivering social media marketing presentations and services.

Here’s his most recent presentation titled; social media impact on business and marketing.

I’m featuring David here because there are too few who go unrecognized in the industry, who’re really helping to raise the level in Malaysia. Be it website design, development, applications and ideas.

So, if you’ve a website or person you’d like to recommend, please do let me know. However, I’ll make it clear by saying my reviews are honest and of my personal opinion. If it’s good or average, it is and if it’s not, then you know there’s improvements to be made.

PacketOne (P1) Prepaid Wimax Wiggy Packages

Kudos to P1 for adding an alternative solution to Internet prepaid users.

Although I use Streamyx at home, I have never used their hotspot service because they have limited coverage thanks to their strategic tie-ups with selected outlets only. Starbucks is definitely a place with good coffee and free WiFi, but the connection reliability dies once you’ve more than 5 users on the network.

The one thing I’ve considered though is how much is my usage within 15 days and 30 days. This is definitely very important to me because as a user who downloads, an amount of 2GB may sound little. Then again, I won’t be doing any torrent-ing on the go.

So, this calls for an experiment. The experiment would involve working out of the office for the duration of 15 and 30 days while using the P1 prepaid Wiggy service. It’ll be a RM70 investment or sponsor to asses my actual business and personal use of the P1 prepaid Wiggy. Just how much bandwidth will I really use.

Hmm, where am I going to get a sponsor for this experiment. Any takers? :P

DiGi Pimp My Broadband Winners List

It’s been quite the wait for the announcement of winners to the DiGi Pimp My Broadband online contest. But finally, the votes are out and the winners are announced. Sadly, I wasn’t in the Top 10 for my DiGi pimp my broadband video. LOL! :P

But my hats off to the Top 3 winners of the online video contest. I really liked the 1st and 2nd winners entries as it was creative and time-consuming. Even if you people aren’t popular, the videos you made definitely has contributed that factor. Kudos!

1st Prize Winner: Trevor Thum

2nd Prize Winner: Wee Yin San

3rd Prize Winner: Jason Ding

Although I didn’t win a MacBook Air or HP netbook, all the video entry winners walkaway with a free 3-months subscription for DiGi Broadband. This prize is awarded to the top 50 entries and there were around only 30+ video entries. Hooray! :)

Well, I sense a broadband comparison review coming up. The war is going to go 3-ways in this blog. The hippo, the shears and the yellow man.

Who d’you think will immerse a winner?

Yahoo! Malaysia, I found a ticket for Youreka!

In an effort to remain a popular choice to Malaysians, Yahoo! Malaysia is now running an online contest in their new marketing campaign; Youreka! This campaign is to promote and increase their awareness, readership, members to their news portal, mail service and other services offered.

The idea is a treasure hunt to locate one of 3 tickets in either Yahoo! Malaysia, the news portal, the mail service or the the messenger. Yahoo! has tied up with local vendors like Adidas and fashionistas like Tongue in Chic, to name a few, to help them promote this campaign.

In total, there are 4 colored tickets; red, blue, green and purple. The purple ones are the wild card for you to stand a chance to win one of the many prizes they’ll be giving out at the Youreka! finale party. These prizes are from the Blackbery Curve, Adidas shoes and accessories to even movie screening tickets.

I’ve already redeemed my gift for the red ticket, I got a water bottle. And it’s at these redemption spots, you’re asked to dip into their box to see if you’re lucky enough to pull out a purple tag. If not, you can redeem 1 of 2 gifts.

This is quite an interesting campaign to run and I’ve definitely thought about it before. A mini treasure hunt or scavenger hunt within a website automatically boosts traffic and makes it fun browsing it.

However, I hope spotting the remaining tickets later wouldn’t be as difficult. I’ve tried finding the tickets in Yahoo! messenger and Yahoo! mail but it was nearly impossible.

So far, I’ve found had better luck finding the red and blue tickets in the news portal. That’s an insiders tip for you, if you’re participating in Youreka! :)

The 3 Most Common WordPress Theme Types

Before you ask, why only WordPress? It’s because I’ve only been following, researching and observing WordPress ever since I transitioned from being a MovableType to WordPress. Hence, this is my observation of the 3 most common wordpress theme types.

Type 1: Free WordPress themes

free

WordPress has made itself super popular because of the many downloadable themes you can find all around the Web. Now, not only do designers/developers create WordPress themes from scratch to be released free.

But, other designers/developers modify and repackage these themes as something brand new as a free download. Some of them will credit the original theme author but some claim it as their own.

Type 2: Paid or Premium WordPress themes

premium

The word premium is now commonly used by WordPress theme designers/developers to tell users they’re selling a WordPress theme. Premium WordPress themes have matured from only custom designed WordPress themes to flexible multi-optional WordPress themes.

Many WordPress theme designers/developers now like Woo Themes, Revolution Theme, Elegant Themes, Headway Themes, Thesis and the list goes on, have carved a new market for themselves.

Type 3: Custom WordPress themes

custom

The bridge between premium WordPress themes and custom WordPress themes is becoming shorter. Some premium WordPress themes do come with layout editors, but even these editors aren’t enough to fulfill the customization needs sometimes.

Which is why, some premium WordPress theme designers/developers also offer custom WordPress theme design services. And why not? They’ve already got a library of frameworks, scripts and good reputation to boot.

Wow, so what type of WordPress theme should I get?

It’s difficult to recommend the ideal choice. The best advice I’d give is find one which suits your needs, and budget. It’s not wrong starting with a free WordPress theme because it’s the content which matters. From there, you can look into either a premium WordPress theme or a custom WordPress there.

But if you do invest in a premium WordPress theme, always ensure they’ve got great support. Otherwise, you could be left in the dark part of the way.
